In Honor of Sgt. Henry E. Plant
Oct. 11, 1841 - April 15, 1925.
Henry Ebenezer Plant was born in New York in 1841 and migrated with his family at the age of 13 to a farm near Nunica and Spoonville, Ottawa County, Michigan. Henry enlisted the 14th Michigan Infantry during the first year of the Civil War and was wounded during the siege Corinth, Mississippi in 1862. On March 19, 1865, during the battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, after his company's color bearer fell mortally wounded, Henry ran to the colors, took the flag from the hand of his fallen comrade, and waving it, inspired his company to a more determined resistance. For his actions on the field, he was promoted to Sergeant and made color-bearer of his regiment. Sgt. Plant was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on April 27, 1896 - the first in the United States for rescuing his regimental colors. Sgt. Plant is the first Medal of Honor recipient from Ottawa County, Michigan, and the 14th Michigan Infantry.
