In the military he spelled his last name as Veal. His true and buried last name is spelled Veale. He was born in 1838 in Portsmouth, VA and died on July 27, 1872 in Hampton, VA. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: VEAL, CHARLES

Citation: Seized the national colors after 2 color bearers had been shot down close to the enemy's works, and bore them through the remainder of the battle.
