The brick and limestone Low Plaza is opposite the steps of the Low Memorial Library. It was designed by architect Robert A.M. Stern to resemble a Greek amphitheater. The main feature of this plaza are a pair of identical fountains set 135' apart on the east and west ends of the plaza.
Each brown stone fountain is has a 15' diameter ground level basin from which rises a center column containing a 10' diameter bowl. A short column with a pineapple design cap has a nozzle that ejects water into the air and which falls down into the upper bowl and overflows into the basin at ground level.
A bronze plaque on the basin of each fountain is inscribed:
THIS FOUNTAIN
IS THE GIFT OF
MARCELLUS HARTLEY DODGE
OF THE CLASS OF

Marcellus Hartley Dodge was a member of the Phelps Dodge Corporation family and was chairman of the board of Remington Arms Company. He was also the president of the Y.M.C.A. in the United States.
