German Naval Mines
Germany made extensive use of this type of naval mine during the Second World War.
This model had to be struck by a ship or submarine before it would explode. Other types of mine were triggered by disturbances in the earth's magnetic field caused by the metal in a vessel's hull. Still others were triggered by noise or by the changes in water pressure created by a moving ship. Some used a combination of triggers, which made them very dangerous and difficult to neutralize.
