The University (2003) is an abstract sculpture by Arthur L. Carter -- "a group of stainless steel curves that loop around one another to create a spherical sculpture that appears both grounded and weightless." It is located next to the Bobst Library at New York University at the corner of 50 West 4th Street and Washington Square East, New York, New York. 88 x 124 x 79 inches.

The Story of Arthur Carter began with his birth in New York City on December 24, 1931. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Brown University in 1953, served three years in the US Coast Guard from 1953 to 1956, and then received an MBA at Dartmouth College in 1959. He spent the next twenty-five years as an investment banker. In 1981 and 1987, respectively, he founded The Litchfield County Times and New York Observer newspapers.

Carter's career as a sculptor evolved from his interest in the newspapers' graphics. He started by converting those grids and geometries into three dimensions in wood, clay, copper wire, and, eventually, larger forms in silicon bronze, copper and stainless steel. Many of his works are on permanent public display in California, Connecticut, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
