Until 1427 there was a fortified castle on this site. From 1428 a new castle was built. The result was a four-wing castle complex with a keep in the middle and surrounded by a moat. In 1735 the tower was crowned with a baroque dome.
Since 1921 the castle museum Jever is in the castle.
