4-inch Naval Gun

This weapon is an improvement of the main gun carried by Canadian corvettes and other escort vehicles of the Second World War.

The original design of the 4-inch gun dates to the First World War. While effective against surfaced submarines, the gun was relatively slow to operate and offered little protection to its crew. This particular version of the gun could fire faster and had an improved range, but was developed too late for use in the Second World War.

From the Canadian War Museum Website:

This weapon, and its mounting, are late-war developments of the main gun carried by Canadian corvettes and other escort ships. The original design of this gun dated to the First World War. While effective against surfaced submarines and capable of firing starshells to provide night-time illumination, it proved relatively slow to operate and offered little protection to its crew. This modified version, developed too late to see service during the Second World War, could fire shells faster and farther. An improved gun shield offered better protection to its crew.

4-Inch Naval Gun
Second World War corvettes and frigates used guns like this to illuminate the sea around convoys with star shells or to fire 18.8kg armour-piercing shells at surfaced German U-Boats. This gun mount was made near Calgary, Alberta, in the Canadian Pacific Railway's Ogden Shop.
