The ferry terminal is in the river Mersey Estuary on the western side of the river. On the western side of the river was the port of Liverpool and many ships using the port were attacked by German U-Boats during the war.
The raid on Zeebrugge was an attempt to blockade the port and reduce the number of U-Boats attacking shipping. Amongst other ships the raiding party used two Mersey ferries, the Daffodil and the Iris, because of their shallow draught.
The raid was only of limited success but in recognition of the ferries role in the raid they were renamed the Royal Iris and Royal Daffodil.
