The light house is fee standing white painted granite tower with a red iron lantern.

It opened in 1830 to defend the port of Liverpool. It is 29 m (95 ft) tall and displayed two white flashes followed by a red flash every minute.

At low tide it is possible to walk to the light house but cannot enter it. The entrance to the lighthouse is 25 feet off the ground with a metal ladder attached to the outside wall.
