Asteroid 7896 Svejk (1995 EC)
The main-belt asteroid 7896 Svejk (1995 EC) was discovered by a Czech astronomer Z. Moravec at Klet observatory on March 1, 1995. Named for a literary character created by Jaroslav Hašek, Czech writer and humorist (1883-1923). His "good soldier" Josef Švejk is devoted to the disintegrating Austrian-Hungarian monarchy regime, but by his simplicity (or perhaps his ingenuity) he helps to reveal its flaws.
Statue
The bronze statue of the famous fictional character "the Good Soldier Švejk (Schweik)" was unveiled on May 20, 2017 in front of the Town Hall in Kralupy nad Vltavou. The Good Soldier Švejk is a fictional character from the book of a Czech writer, humorist and satirists Jaroslav Hašek (1883-1923) -"The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk During the World War". The statue depicts the soldier Švejk sitting on a bench with a dog on his lap and a dog's poo on the ground beside the bench with four sitting flies. The author of the statue Albert Králicek inspired himself in a Czech movie "The Good Soldier Schweik (1955)" and his statue thus resembles the Czech actor Rudolf Hrušínský who played the main role in the movie. The statue was paid from contributions of member of a local "Society of the friends of the Good soldier Schweik (Spolek prátel Josefa Švejka) - (
