"Built from 1880 to 1883 on the plans of General Séré de Rivières, Fort Pompelle was one of the seven forts of the fortified belt protecting the city of Reims.

During the First World War, he was the keystone of the defense of the sector of Reims, resistant to German assaults from September 1914 to October 1918.

Russian soldiers fought alongside the French from autumn 1916 to spring 1917. Today, it houses the largest museum dedicated to the Great War in Champagne-Ardenne, presenting, among other things, a collection unique to the world of 560 hairstyles of the German Imperial Army.

Abandoned for forty years, the ruins of the fort were put on sale in 1955. The National Federation André Maginot acquires and then gives it to the city of Reims in 1968. "
