In the book Louisa and Mary Ellen are creeping towards the door of Misses Pussy-cat's shop (Thimble Hall).

Almost opposite is the Queen's Head Inn where Beatrix Potter holidayed in August 1896, with her parents. It was whilst staying there that she saw Bostock and Wombwell's Menagerie (a fore runner to the circus) which contributed to the book.
