A lighthouse in its earliest form, was a marker to warn or tell ships where they were and of any dangers, fires would have been lit near by.Commonly known as "the pepper pot" structure.
At that time Portreath harbour was a busy industrial port. Importing coal and materials and exporting minerals mined throughout Cornwall.
I was important to indicate the harbours location and the hazards faced entering the harbour.
With sail reliant on the prevailing wind "Westerly", it would have been easy for incoming ships/boats under sail to crash into the rugged Cornish coast
The structure was also used as a "Huer's hut" where spotters would lookout for the fishermen and let them know when the shoals of fish were going by.
