"St Mary was founded in 1865, it was located in the northern-most tip of the (very large) Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles— not the Diocese of San Jose. In 1932, when the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno was created, Gilroy was “traded” over to the Archdiocese of San Francisco in exchange for Merced. In 1981, St. Mary became part of the brand new Diocese of San Jose. The present church building is the third on the site and was dedicated in December 1965." (visit link)
