In 2014 the "Outside the Box" program was organized by Hartford's Marketing, Events, & Cultural Affairs Office (MECA) and Livable Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative. Area artists were selected, and each winning artist was given a utility box on Franklin Avenue to paint, to create a series of painted utility boxes public art along Franklin Avenue.
A native of Guatemala, Balam Soto was a painter before he discovered the potential of mixing technology into his art. He painted this utility box with a series of multicolored polygons against a yellow background. The front contains the type of pieces yet to be tessalated. The sides are filled with multicolor tessalated polygons. The back is near a brick wall and painted yellow. QR codes appear on the front three sides and the top. The URL link is broken.
