The memorial plaque is deep in the forest, near two benches and a play structure. The official address for Louis Turner Park is 1190 Old Second Line Road. However, trail access is from Goward Drive. It is odd that this kind of park would be dedicated to a pioneer of community hockey.
A resident of the former March Township, Louis Turner's contributions to his community began in the early 1960s when he created the area's first organized hockey team for youth. Louis served as the team's sole organizer, acting as the team's coach, manager, chaperone and chauffeur. He entered his team in the Ottawa Cradle League, which played out of the Old Auditorium in Ottawa. In the early 1970s Louis started the City of Kanata's first hockey team, the Kanata Chiefs. The Chiefs played out of the John G. Mlacak Arena, Kanata's first indoor arena. Louis is forever remembered as a tireless volunteer and builder of local hockey in Kanata.
Résident de l'ancien canton de March, Louis Turner amorce ses contributions communautaires au début des années 1960 en créant la toute première équipe organisée de hockey pour jeunes. Louis est alors l'unique organisateur de l'équipe, faisant office à la fois d'entraîneur, de gérant, d'accompagnateur et de chauffeur. Il inscrit son équipe dans l'Ottawa Cradle League, dont les parties se jouent alors à l'ancien auditorium d'Ottawa. Au début des années 1970, Louis fonde la première équipe de hockey de la Ville de Kanata, les Chiefs. L'équipe élit domicile à l'aréna John G. Mlacak, le tout premier aréna intérieur de Kanata. Louis sera toujours, dans notre esprit, un bénévole infatigable et un bâtisseur du hockey local à Kanata.
