Ezra and his father Nathaniel were among the 21 Connecticut soldiers with the last name "Griffin" who fought in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). They lived in Connecticut at the time of the War. Because the Colonists in Connecticut "felt in constant threat from the Dutch in New York, the French in Canada, and Indians on all sides, the colony required each settlement to man and maintain a military unit...every able-bodied man over the age of 16 bore arms and drilled regularly," thus the reason for Ezra's and many other Griffin relative's military involvement. Ezra was about 15 years old when he began his involvement with the War.
