New Brunswick’s first library opened in Saint John in 1811. It operated on a subscription basis with a fee being charged for using the facility. In 1874 plans were made to establish a tax funded free public library in Saint John. However, the Great Saint John Fire of 1877 delayed the plans.
On May 18, 1883 the present Saint John Public Library opened at City Market on Charlotte Street as the first tax supported free public library in Canada. In 1983, after several other expansions and moves, the library occupied its present location in Market Square.
