FR L'église Notre Dame du Thor se situe dans le village d'Oraison au cœur des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Construite en 1662, maintes fois reconstruite et restaurée, c'est un exemple rare dans notre région de la pénétration gothique.
Cet édifice était autrefois paroissial et dépendait du diocèse de Riez. Les murs sont en moellons hourdés au mortier de chaux. Ces moellons sont également en galets de la Durance, toutes les nervures et arcs sont en pierre de taille. L'église se compose d'une nef centrale et deux collatérales avec quatre travées et un chœur. On peut y admirer deux tableaux classés au titre des monuments historiques: L'adoration des Mages et La Mort de Saint Joseph.
Le clocher a été surélevé en 1885 pour atteindre 33 mètres, et sa cloche du XVIIème siècle provient du village d'Ubaye englouti sous les eaux. C'est cette cloche que l'on entend sonner dans le célèbre film de Jean Giono L'Eau Vive.
Beaucoup plus récemment, des horloges ont été mises en place aux 4 coté du clocher. Elle ssont rondes et cerclées de noir. Les aiguilles, les chiffes romains et leurs séparations sont également en noir.
Récemment, des travaux ont permis de découvrir un nombre conséquent de vestiges archéologiques, dans une zone d'Oraison où jusqu'alors seules des découvertes anciennes témoignaient du potentiel archéologique. De nombreux arguments plaident désormais en faveur d'une occupation funéraire quasi continue de cet espace depuis l'Antiquité tardive et de la présence probable d'un édifice religieux bien avant la date estimée de la construction de l'église actuelle.
EN Notre Dame du Thor church is located in the village of Oraison in the heart of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Built in 1662, repeatedly rebuilt and restored, it is a rare example of Gothic penetration in our region.
This building was once a parish and was part of the Diocese of Riez. The walls are made of rubble hourded with lime mortar. These rubble stones are also made of Durance pebbles, all the ribs and arches are made of ashlar. The church consists of a central nave and two side aisles with four bays and a choir. Two paintings classified as historic monuments can be admired: The Adoration of the Magi and The Death of Saint Joseph.
The bell tower was raised in 1885 to 33 metres, and its 17th century bell comes from the village of Ubaye, which was swallowed up by the water. It is this bell that can be heard ringing in Jean Giono's famous film L'Eau Vive.
Much more recently, clocks have been installed on all 4 sides of the bell tower. They are round and surrounded by black. The hands, Roman numerals and their separations are also in black.
Recently, work has led to the discovery of a significant number of archaeological remains in an Oraison area where only ancient discoveries have so far demonstrated the archaeological potential. There are now many arguments in favour of an almost continuous funeral occupation of this space since late antiquity and the probable presence of a religious building well before the estimated date of construction of the current church.
