The Hill of Wirren is part of the Braes of Angus, the southern edge of the Grampians that extend north-eastwards above Strathmore in Eastern Scotland. At over 600 metres the hill is one of the highest in the area and prominent from the lower ground to the south. The hill covers covers a vast area between the glens of Lethnot and Esk and throws out shanks, or ridges, in all directions.

This pillar stands on the highest point of the hill at 678 metres on a level area of summit which abounds with peat-hags. The pillar is in good condition, although the base it stands on is eroded and virtually an island in wet conditions due to the surrounding nature of the ground. There are views to the higher mountains to the north-west, such as Lochnagar and the Cairngorms, and southwards over the lowlands as far as Fife and the Lothians. The neighbouring height of East Wirren, which also has a pillar, blocks out the view to the south-east.

STEEPNESS: A stiff climb from all directions which eases on the vast summit area.

TERRAIN:The myriad of bulldozed tracks on the hill ease the going, but the last quarter mile or so is trackless and crosses awkward eroded peaty terrain with patches of heather and grass.

ACCESSIBILITY: The hill can be climbed in various directions via the hill tracks, but is closest from Glen Lethnot which is two miles away to the south-west. From the foot of Glen Lethnot to the south it is four miles, and from Glen Esk to the north, around five miles.

NAVIGATION: The last few hundred yards on the trackless terrain, coupled with the flattish summit, make finding the pillar in mist a difficult task. A double fence that crosses the summit passes within a few yards to the south of the pillar, as does a similar fence to the east.

DANGER: Avoid during the grouse shooting season. Care needed in mist and wet conditions.
