The River Goyt at New Mills passes through a deep sided sandstone gorge, whilst the town itself is situated on top of the cliffs above the river.

During the industrial revolution a number of water powered mills were built along the river. Over time however the industry declined an urban park was constructed along the banks of the river Goyt and the river Sett. However the middle section was inaccessible because the gorge holding the River Goyt was too narrow.

As the Millennium approached National Lottery Funds were awarded to the town to build this walkway along the river. It is in the form of an elevated 160m long cantilevered walkway.

As well as giving a link for both ends of the park it provides the important ‘missing link’ for the Mid Shires Way, allowing people to walk the whole scenic, 275 mile trail.
