Canada and the United States share the longest undefended border in the world. Occasionally it is used for illegal crossings.

The Smuggler's Inn owner Robert Joseph Boulé was in the Provincial Court of British Columbia for allegedly "inducing, aiding or abetting" seven people who attempted to illegally enter Canada.

The Smuggler's Inn is in Blaine, Washington, but its northern property line is the Canadian-American border. And, as is very common along the length of the 8,891 km | 5,525 mi border between two friendly nations, there is no fence.

Most local people know where the border runs and there are survey posts along it to help determine its location. However, for The Smuggler's Inn many guests would arrive in the evening and come breakfast they were gone. Boulé has long suspected these people were fleeing in Canada.

Eventually, the situation caught up to Boulé and he was extradited to Canada to face charges on "inducing, aiding or abetting". At his bail hearing in April 2019, he had to install this sign to clearly inform visitors of what can happen if they cross the line.

To make the situation more frustrating for Brulé is that immediately on the Canadian side of the border is 0 Avenue. This is where I stood to take the picture of the sign and the location of the waymark. This illustrated photo from CBC News shows exactly where the border is in relation to The Smuggler's Inn and 0 Avenue.

BTW, it is also illegal to cross from Canada into the United States without going through a proper Port of Entry. In this case, the Port of Blaine is just a short distance down the road.
