Cochrage Muir is a vast area of moorland on high ground north-west of the town of Blairgowrie and south of the Bridge of Cally. The muir is home to deer and grouse and is a mixture of heather and grass. The pillar stands on a prominent hillock at 296 metres, although this is not the highest point in the area, the land continuing to rise to the north-west. Being in such a remote out of the way location, the pillar is in good condition with a covering of moss and lichen. Views are to the mountains to the north, and southwards over the lowlands.

STEEPNESS: The approach along the muir is fairly level until the short climb up to the pillar.

TERRAIN: A good track passes by around two hundred yards north of the pillar, but from here the final part is over a mixture of heather and occasionally mossy grass which can be boggy in the wet.

ACCESSIBILITY: The long distance walking route, the Cateran Trail passes within a mile of the pillar to the east as it crosses the muir between Blairgowrie and Bridge of Cally. It's around four miles from Blairgowrie and two from Bridge of Cally.

NAVIGATION: From the Cateran Trail, a track signposted to Kirkmicheal heads in a north-westerly direction, reaching a small loch after around half a mile. In clear conditions the pillar can be seen from here as the track rounds the eastern edge of the loch. As the track continues beyond the loch the pillar can be reached by a plod through the heather from the east.

DANGER: Avoid the area during the grouse shooting season in late summer and autumn.
