The Torrey Canyon one of the first supertankers of its time, carrying 110000 tons Crude oil to Milford Haven oil refinery Wales UK. ran aground on the Longship's reef.

The result of this tanker going aground, the wreck cause a nation disaster contaminating wildlife marine life and beaches. Attempts were made to refloat the vessle which failed. It was bombed to try and burn off the floating oil. which equally failed.
Following this disaster improvement were made in the construction of supertankers including double hulls.
