According to signage around Vittoria, the first pioneers to settle this area were United Empire Loyalists. Most of the UELs that arrived here in the 1790s had fled the United States due to persecution for their loyalty to the British during the 1770s and 1780s. They were settled in British-friendly New Brunswick and Nova Scotia but the conditions there were too harsh for long-term settlement. As such, the British brought them to the north shore of Lake Erie, The Long Point Settlement, in the 1790s. A list of those settlers can be found at (visit link) Those with "Charlotteville" as their township are from the Vittoria area.
