In 1739 Cardinal Giulio Alberoni, the papal legate in Ravenna, attempted the annexation of the Republic of San Marino to the Vatican State. On the morning of 17th October 1739, he crossed the borders of San Marino with three coaches. He was accompanied by the Master of Chamber, the Abbot of the Lateranensi from Rimini, two notaries and two servants. Some influential families from San Marino support him, because they hoped to gain advantages from it.
But the majority of the San Marineses, led by Capitano Reggente Girolamo Gozi, resisted passively and turned to the Pope, who sent Cardinal Enrico Enriquez to San Marino to report on the situation there. On the basis of his statements the Pope ordered Cardinal Alberoni to retreat from San Marino, and so the republic was already half a year later free again on February 5, 1740.

At the Piazza Sant'Agata is this life-sized bronze statue in front of a monument with a bronze relief on three sides honours Girolamo Gozi and "the other defenders of freedom". It was created by the Italian sculptor Enrico Saroldi (1878-1954). The signature is: E. Saroldi; fond. art. BATTAGLIA & Co milano. On the pedestal there is the following inscription:

A
GIROLAMO GOZI
E AGLI ALTRI DIFENSORI
DELLA LIBERTA'
1739-1740
per senato consvlto
nel secondo centenario
