This broad printed sign at the rear of Montrose Park is mounted on a couple of steel pipes, set back at an angle, and details the work and life of Herbert Wiliam Watson O.B.E. (10 December 1886 - 28 August 1972). It reads:

"Herbert William Watson devoted his life to helping others. In 1962 H. W. Watson was awarded an Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in recognition of his services. He was named "QLD Father of the Year" in 1965 and "Citizen of the Year" in 1969.

"Mr Watson was a foundation member of the Queensland Crippled Children's Society, formed in 1932 when the poliomyelitis epidemic spread to Brisbane with devastating effects. In 1969, at age 83, he was still Honorary Secretary and Superintendent of the Montrose Crippled Children's Home and Secretary and Vice-President of the Queensland Crippled Childrn's Society.

"He was a teacher and headmaster in the Education Department for 20 years, secretary of the Ipswich Pastoral and Agricultural Society and assistant secretary of the Royal National Association (RNA) for 25 years. Herbert Watson was also an honorary ambulance bearer in the days of horse-drawn litters; a Sunday School superintendent; honorary organiser of Bush Children's holiday camps, as well as president and secretary of Brisbane Rotary. He was a life member of the RNA, and of the Clayfield Bowling Club, and a super veteran Queensland Bowls Association bowler.

"On receiving his awards, Mr Watson expressed satisfaction that the Montrose Home had never charged fees nor asked for help or donations from the public or government, and that no gimmicks or raffle tickets had been sold.

"Although he had no father from the age of five, Herbert Watson, along with his wife Isabella, had eight children of their own as well as being "father" to the thousands of children who were supported by the Montrose Home and Crippled Children's Society. The Watson family lived in a residence on the site and their sone Bert went on to manage Montrose for twenty years."
