Several family members share the same Carter stone. Herman is the only one with a death mask. Other sides of the stone seem to have his parents and two brothers with their wives.

Family members in Spring Forest Cemetery on the same gravestone include his parents John and Alida M. Carter, his brother Eli Cook Carter with wife Marion, brother William with wife Rachel. There are small stones around the large stone. One of the small stones is for Harriet Carter, probably a sister. Beulah Maria Carter Ogden is probably a sister buried separately in the cemetery.

There are separate stones that seem to indicate Herman and Eli were Civil War veterans; Herman 4th co, 7th reg. NY., Eli,137th NY., Green's Brigade. Green's Brigade held Culp's Hill at Gettysburg during a critical part of the battle.

There doesn't seem to be a wife for Herman.
