This pub sign is in the format of a silhouette cut out and as one would expect from the pub name shows a ferry boat.

Egremont is on the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite Liverpool on the east bank.

The ferry in question no longer runs, but used to connect Egremont and Liverpool. The is an information board on the pub wall with the story of the ferry.
THE FERRY

THE AREA NOW KNOWN AS EGREMONT TOOK ITS
NAME FROM THE VILLA OF LIVERPOOL HARBOUR
MASTER JOHN ASKEW, WHO NAMED IT
'EGREMONT' AFTER HIS BIRTHPLACE IN CUMBRIA.
SINCE 1761 HE HAD BEEN 'PULLED ACROSS IN HIS
GALLEY' DAILY TO REACH HIS WORKPLACE ON
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER IN LIVERPOOL. BY
1823, HE WAS ALLOWING FRIENDS AND OTHERS
TO USE THE LANDING PLACE TO THE BOTTOM OF
HIS GARDEN FORA SMALL FEE.

THIS CONCERNED THE SMITH TRUSTEES, WHO
ACCUSED ASKEW OF INFRINGING THE SEACOMBE
RITES OF PASSAGE. THEY INITIATED COURT
PROCEEDINGS AGAINST ASKEW, BUT THE COURT
RULING STATED THAT 'THE OWNERS OF THE
SEACOMBE PASSAGE EXERCISED NO RIGHTS OVER
THE STRAND TO THE NORTH' WITH HIS
POSITION APPARENTLY SECURE, ASKEW
PURCHASED THE FERRY RIGHTS FOR £3,000 AND
LEASED THE SHORELINE. A 200 FOOT WOODEN
PIER WAS BUILT IN 1830 AND A FERRY SERVICE
COMMENCED SOON AFTER.

THE FERRY PUBLIC HOUSE IS THE CENTRAL
POINT OF THE EGREMONT PROMENADE. THE
BUILDING WAS ORIGINALLY USED AS A POLICE
STATION, UNTIL THE BUILDING WAS GUTTED,
LEAVING JUST A BRICK FRAME AND TILED ROOF.
