He was born on July 8, 1841 in Edgar County, IL and died on February 2, 1920 in West Terre Haute, IN. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: STERLING, JOHN T.
• Rank and organization: Private, Company D, 11th Indiana Infantry
• Place and date: At Winchester, Va., 19 September 1864
• Entered service at: Marion County, Ind. Birth. Edgar County, Ill.
• Date of issue: 4 April 1865
Citation: With one companion captured 14 of the enemy in the severest part of the battle.
Armed Service: Army
