When in the seventeenth century, the lord of Laleu wanted to raise his lordship to the rank of barony, he built a church at L'Houmeau. This agglomeration had then only a place of worship dependent on the churches of Nieul-sur-mer and Lagord. The ecclesiastical authorities required for this realization five churches in the castellany to reach the rank of barony.

HOLY ACQUITTERY

 

 Visitors can notice in the church, fixed on the wooded wall of the tribune, a painted wooden statuette representing Saint Acquitterie. This statuette was donated by an inhabitant of L'Houmeau to the parish priest a long time ago. It comes from a property where it was exposed to the public, perhaps a priory at the time. Believers came to pray to remedy their ills and mainly somatic diseases.

It is even said that the crowd that went to this place overflowed the staff and the limits of the said property on certain days of affluence. The legend adds that two girls had fled their father's house in Portugal, to escape the paternal desire to marry them against their will. Sainte Acquisitterie would be one of those girls who were refugees in our country after a very long march. A second statuette exists in the church of Sainte Gemme la Plaine (Vendée), identical to that of L'Houmeau, and it is said that this is an evocation of the sister of Saint Acquitterie.

 Subterranean passages lead to the church, as further evidence of its ancient edification, suggesting that this secret journey was used to pray to the church despite the dangers of pillage and other abuses directed against the inhabitants and harvests of the church. country. Lorsqu'au XVII ème siècle, le seigneur de Laleu voulut élever sa seigneurie au rang de baronnie, il fit construire une église à L'Houmeau. Cette agglomération ne possédait alors qu'un lieu de culte dépendant des églises de Nieul-sur-mer et de Lagord. Les autorités ecclésiastiques exigeaient pour cette réalisation cinq églises dans la châtellenie pour accéder au rang de baronnie.

Il s'agit bien de l'endroit de culte que nous connaissons actuellement, qui reçut des aménagements et améliorations en 1867, date qui figure sur sa façade ouest. Ces améliorations firent probablement suite à une délibération du conseil municipal en date de 1812, se plaignant à l'autorité de tutelle de l'état de vétusté de cet immeuble "sans clocher, sans fonds baptismaux et ressemblant davantage à un corps de garde qu'à un lieu de culte".

Autre preuve si besoin est de l'existence de ce lieu Saint avant la date inscrite sur sa façade ouest, l'inhumation à l'intérieur dès 1726 de personnes du village. En 1628 cette église fut donc reconnue comme telle et placée sous la protection de Saint Maixence, puis mise plus tard sous l'invocation de Sainte Anne et placée sous l'autorité de l'Evêché de La Rochelle. A cette époque les protestants avaient un temple à L'Houmeau où ils célébraient leur culte.



SAINTE ACQUITTERIE



Les visiteurs peuvent remarquer dans l'église, fixée sur la paroi boisée de la tribune, une statuette en bois peint représentant Sainte Acquitterie. Cette statuette a été remise par un habitant de L'Houmeau au curé de la paroisse il y a fort longtemps. Elle provient d'une propriété où elle était exposée au public, peut-être un prieuré à l'époque. Les croyants venaient la prier pour remédier à leurs maux et principalement les maladies somatiques.

On prétend même que la foule qui se rendait à cet endroit débordait le personnel et les limites de la dite propriété certains jours d'affluence. La légende ajoute que deux jeunes filles s'étaient enfuies de la maison paternelle au Portugal, pour échapper à la volonté paternelle de les marier contre leur gré. Sainte Acquitterie serait l'une de ces jeunes filles réfugiées dans notre pays après une très longue marche. Une seconde statuette existe en l'église de Sainte Gemme la Plaine ( Vendée ), identique à celle de L'Houmeau, et on affirme qu'il s'agit là d'une évocation de la sœur de Sainte Acquitterie.

Des souterrains aboutissent à l'église, comme une preuve supplémentaire de son édification ancienne, laissant supposer qu'on utilisait ce cheminement secret pour aller prier à l'église malgré les dangers consécutifs aux pilleries et autres exactions dirigées contre les habitants et les récoltes du pays. Une liaison souterraine ( présentement murée ) relie l'église aux bâtiments de l'actuelle mairie, du côté rue, à une grande salle, creusée dans le sol, non éclairée, ayant pu être utilisée comme abri ou comme lieu de prière.
