The Alfred U. Menard Bandstand gazebo site is on the east end of the Manville Veterans Common in Manville, Rhode Island. It sits in a small park among a grove of Crimson Maple trees and memorial monuments just south of the Blackstone River and the local Post Office.
The octagonal gazebo has natural wood posts, beams, and railings. The roof is covered in rustic cedar colored asphalt shingles. The structure is built on a poured concrete base about a foot high. One crumbling concrete step leads up to the single opening on the west side.
Two engraved dedication plaques of gray granite are embedded flush within the center of the floor. The north marker refers to the surrounding trees dedicated to Manville citizens who were casualties of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. The southern plaque denotes the bandstand's honoree and reads as follows:
THIS BANDSTAND IS DEDICATED TO
THE HONORABLE
ALFRED U. MENARD
SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE
OF THE RI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
WHO SERVED THIS VILLAGE FAITHFULLY
FROM 1935 THROUGH 1965
A single five-pointed star is carved at each of the four corners of the plaque. The Seal of Rhode Island, centered in the bottom third of the presentation, is engraved beneath the text -- with its anchor on a shield, "State of Rhode Island" on a ribbon above, and shortest State Motto - "HOPE" - on a ribbon bellow.
