"Marktkreuz

"The Market Cross
In 1602 townfolks on Andernach erected a huge cruzifix. Ever since the 18th century the corss has held great importance to the local neigborhood that care for it. They even refer to themselves as "cross market neighborhood". The cross is shrouded in many legends. It is said that at the end of the 17th century during the French occupation, a French soldier dug his sword into the foot of the cruzifix. The sword broke, the soldier was sent away and died soon after. Around 1900 the tavern "Stadtschänke" was built and the area directly around the cross was redesigned. A new fence, some adjoining figures and a new canopy were added."
