This pillar stands on the 742 metre high Hill of Cat, a rolling moorland summit on the watershed of the Mounth, the high plateau of the Grampian Mountains as they head eastwards. The pillar lies just within the Angus side of the border with Aberdeenshire (south of a broken fence), and lies almost equidistant between the Munro of Mount Keen and Corbett of Mount Battock, both also sporting pillars on their summits. The pillar is a replacement of a previous version, the remnants of which still lie adjacent, along with a cross-like construction made from the nearby fence. The flushbracket of the original was kept and placed on the current pillar which is still in good condition despite the exposed and remote location.

STEEPNESS: a good climb from north and south which is eased by bulldozed tracks taking a shallower line up the hillside.

TERRAIN: A myriad of bulldozed tracks, some new, snake all over the heathery hillsides in the vicinity. Only the last few hundred yards follow a well trodden route along the old boundary fence.

ACCESSIBILITY: The pillar is around five or six miles from both Glen Esk to the south, and Glen Tanar to the north. The Firmounth Road, a hill track between the two glens, passes within a mile to the east of the summit.

NAVIGATION: Take the Firmounth Road from Glen Tanar, and initially the Fungle Road from Tarfside in Glen Esk, which forks left to the Firmounth after four miles. From the top of the road, a track then heads west, then northwards where the remnants of the boundary fence then head directly west to the summit area and the pillar.

DANGER: Keep to tracks and use gates to avoid the many electric fences that dot the hillside.
