The telegraph station was located in the building next door until 1870 when the telegraph business was amalgamated with the post office in this building. A plaque on the Ryrie St side of the former post office reads :-
"The first Automatic Telephone Exchange in the Southern Hemisphere was established in this building on 6th July 1912".
