Geelong's first Customs House was prefabricated in Sydney and re-erected in 1838 and served until a stone Customs house was erected on Moorabool St. The weatherboard clad building originally had a thatch roof that was replaced with shingles in 1854 and is claimed to be the oldest building extant in Victoria,
In 1854 the building was used as the first Telegraph Office in Geelong with the first message being sent to Melbourne on 6th December 1856 to advise of gold being found at Ballarat.
The fully restored Customs House was moved to it's present location in the Geelong Botanic Gardens in 1975 and is believed to be the oldest extant building in Victoria
