After the Civil War there were many orphans in the midwest, as a result the Lutheran Church established the German Lutheran Orphans Home, July 30, 1867. The orphan home burned in 1935 but was rebuilt despite the depression. The orphanage operated until 1966. The property of the orphanage was purchased by the City of Des Peres and is used as City Hall with the surrounding property as a park.
