Shell limestone sculpture "Hockender Affe" (Squatting monkey) by Hans-Peter Feddersen in the Stadtpark in Hamburg's Winterhude district.

The sculpture:
At the Rose Gardens in Hamburg's Stadtpark, a small monkey sits quietly and relaxes on a stele under the trees. The sculpture of shell limestone presents the animal in a reduced and slightly stylized form with accentuated curves that give the depicted body great clarity. As in a sketch, the sculptor Hans-Peter Feddersen uses just a few lines to grasp the being and present it almost graphically. The body is closely contracted, arms and legs are held close to the torso. Together with the head slightly tilted upwards, the monkey radiates a meditative calm that radiates to the walkers in the park.

The artist:
Hans Peter Feddersen was born on 7 April 1905 in Kiebitzreihe near Hamburg. After attending school in Bergedorf and Hamburg, he completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor before studying at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Academy of Fine Arts), where he became a master pupil of Richard Luksch. After the war he was co-founder of the Baukreis in Hamburg from 1946 and later moved to Hilden near Düsseldorf, where he taught sculpture courses at the Baukreis, which was dissolved in 1953 and then transferred to the Volkshochschule Hilden. In 1979 he co-founded the Haus Hildener Künstler e. V. association and later became a member of the Hamburger Kunstverein. His style is characterized by smooth surfaces and forms as well as clear curves and simplifications. While his early works, including depictions of animals, were still representational, he later created more rigorous works, including abstract works in the form of small sculptures and numerous works in public spaces. Hans Peter Feddersen died on August 7, 1998 in Hilden.
