The Excelsior is a popular public house located on the corner of Dale Street and Johnson Street (opposite the Mersey Tunnel entrance).

The pub is named after a sailing ship, The Excelsior. The hanging pub sign has a picture of a sailing ship on the sea with the name of the pub beneath the picture.

The Excelsior is a large corner pub adjacent to what were Higsons 1962 Brewery offices so they swapped another pub with Walkers to own it. It is a tastefully decorated and comfortable pub that appeals to both business and leisure clientele.
There is a three sided bar in main room, with an attractive area at rear that can be used for meetings and functions.
Food includes award winning pies, traditional dishes and tasty snacks.
Local football is shown on three screens and there is live music on a Saturday night.
