The Canal de Roanne à Digoin runs from the Canal Latéral à la Loire at its northern end down to the port of Roanne 56 kilomtres away.
There are 10 locks on the canal and they are slightly longer than the Freycinet standard at 40m by 5.05m.
The town joined the important city of Roanne to the inland waterways system allowing traffic in and out of the city from the Mediterranean, the Altlantic and northern France.
In the early 1900s there was a plan to build a link from this canal to the Canal de Givors to provide a faster link to the Rhône. Work commenced in 1917 but it was never completed as the Canal de Givors closed in 1926.
