This memorial to the 440 men of the Black Watch from Dundee & Angus who lost their lives in the Second World War, was unveiled in 1959 by HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in front of 3000 people, on Powrie Brae to the north of the city of Dundee.
The bronze memorial of a kilted soldier in battledress standing on a plinth facing the city, was sculpted by Scott Sutherland, the head of sculpture at Dundee College of Art, who was also responsible for the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge.
In the mid 1980s the memorial, which stood on the side of the A929 road as it headed north out of the city by twisting up the hill, was moved due to the new A90 dual-carriageway, which cut straight through the hill, now rendering the old road redundant. The memorial was shifted westwards to stand a few yards east of the new road, still overlooking the city to the north.
A £12,000 restoration of the memorial was unveiled on October 18th 2009, almost 50 years after the original unveiling, by HRH Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay, the Royal Colonel of the Black Watch Battalion.
The inscription on the plinth reads as follows:
'TO THE MEMORY OF ALL RANKS OF THE 4th AND 5th DUNDEE & ANGUS BATTALIONS OF THE BLACK WATCH WHO DIED IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR'
