"The cemetery, today called the burial ground Esterwegen, has been re-named several times. On the originally as "camp cemetery Börgermoor" or by the guards and the prisoners also called "Devil's Mountain" graves were buried the deaths of the concentration camps Börgermoor, Esterwegen and Neusustrum and until 1945 all prison camps in Emsland in individual graves. In addition, at least two Soviet prisoners of war, who had died in the work detachment Klostermoor, are resting here.
Since shortly after the end of the war, the grave list is considered lost, so that the graves are nameless. Since deaths were registered in the camps and registry offices, many names of those buried here can be found.
In the 1950s, exhumations of the concentration camp deaths reburied in the cemetery near the camp Versen and the "night and fog" prisoners who were transferred to their homelands took place.
The wooden and later stone crosses originally set up on the individual graves were no longer used in the reorganization of the cemetery in 1972/73. In the center of the cemetery, the state of Lower Saxony built an open memorial hall in 1981 with the names of the 15 Emsland camps and an information board.
In 1985, at the entrance to the cemetery, the Fédération des Victims du Nazisme, Enrôlées de force Luxembourg, inaugurated a memorial stone with a plaque to commemorate the Luxembourg forced laborers detained in the Emsland camps."
