"Le stade Marcel-Deflandre est le principal stade de la ville de La Rochelle. Il est situé à l'ouest de la ville et est aujourd'hui uniquement destiné au rugby à XV.
Le Stade rochelais jouait dans le champ de sport de Trianon, inauguré le 15 aout 1906. Ce champ de sport qui comportait 3 courts de tennis, un terrain de football entouré d'une piste de course à pieds, et d'un terrain de « Football Rugby », se situait au nord de l'avenue Carnot dans le prolongement de l'avenue Coligny.
En 1924, il fallut quitter le champ de sport de Trianon (pour cause de prolongement de l'avenue Coligny et de construction de lotissement) pour aller jouer, à partir du 16 aout 1924, sur un terrain provisoire (perpendiculaire au futur stade) disponible plus à l'ouest, près du château de Port neuf. Pour l'anecdote, les vestiaires étaient installés dans les boxes de l'ancienne porcherie du château.
Le fief du Stade rochelais est alors inauguré le 19 septembre 1926 puis devient rapidement connu comme le « Parc des Sports de Port-Neuf », situé dans le quartier du même nom.
Le 23 mars 1947, le stade est baptisé en hommage à Marcel Deflandre. Marcel Deflandre est l’homme de la réunification des 3 clubs (l’entente Union-Stade et La Rochelle-Étudiants XIII) sous le nom de Stade rochelais. Il prend la présidence du club en 1941."

"Marcel Deflandre était le fils de Jean-Jacques, typographe, et d’Albertine Roget, ourdisseuse. Le 20 avril 1927, il épousa Alberte Pannier. Le couple eut deux enfants. Il était ingénieur et, depuis 1934 directeur de la raffinerie du Midi à La Pallice (Charente-Inférieure, Charente-Maritime). Son usine fut intégralement occupée par les Allemands et confisquée à la fin de l’année 1940. Il fut alors nommé chef de district du pool des carburants, fonction qu’il assuma jusqu’à son arrestation. Son bureau à La Pallice, face au port, était un excellent poste d’observation d’où il pouvait noter tous les mouvements de bateaux et de sous-marins, les diverses opérations préparatoires à leur sortie de la base et éventuellement à leur départ en mer.
Contacté par Edmond Grasset, il adhéra au mouvement Honneur et Patrie, groupe créé en 1941 par Léopold Robinet et qui prit ce nom au milieu de l’année 1942. Il participa au parachutage réalisé dans le nord du département et devint responsable du secteur OCM de La Rochelle et de l’approvisionnement en carburants des groupes de résistance.
Il fut arrêté par la Sipo-SD le 9 octobre 1943 à Niort (Deux-Sèvres) pour « aide à l’ennemi » dans le cadre de l’opération de police qui aboutit au double démantèlement du mouvement Honneur et Patrie. Transféré à La Rochelle à la prison de Lafond, il fut torturé. Jugé par le tribunal militaire allemand de La Rochelle (FK 540) le 29 décembre 1943, transporté à cette occasion à Bordeaux (Gironde), il fut condamné à mort et fusillé au camp de Souge le 11 janvier 1944."
