"La voie verte « La Houillère » , qui réaffecte la ligne 119 et un court tronçon industriel sur les territoires des Villes de Charleroi et Châtelet, constitue le premier RAVeL urbain en Wallonie.
On sait que la Belgique a connu le réseau ferroviaire le plus dense au monde (10.050 Km en 1935, soit 300 m/Km²). Le pays de Charleroi a possédé le réseau le plus dense de Belgique, du fait de son extraordinaire développement industriel (charbon, sidérurgie, verre), qui en faisait la quatrième métropole industrielle mondiale à la fin du XIXe siècle. Trois réseaux enchevêtrés (trains de voyageurs, voies industrielles, tramways) ont ainsi connu une intense activité. Puis, avec le recul de l'industrie du charbon, ce fut la désaffectation et l'abandon en friche industrielle linéaire. Ainsi, la ligne 119 fut créée en 1879 par l'ancienne Société anonyme des Chemins de fer des Bassins houillers du Hainaut et resta en service partiellement jusque 1992.
C'est dès 1997 que la Ville de Charleroi étudie le projet de transformer en RAVeL la ligne 119, soit 11.7 Km de voies. Celle-ci présentait de grands avantages pour la mobilité, le paysage, la biodiversité, mais aussi de gros problèmes (déchets, coupure de l'espace urbain, dégradation d'ouvrages d'art). Le Ministère de l'Equipement et des Transports (M.E.T.) de la Région wallonne va étudier et mettre en œuvre immédiatement ce projet, première réalisation d'un RAVeL pleinement urbain. L'étude et la réalisation vont se chevaucher sur les années 1997 à 1999. L'inauguration a eu lieu en novembre 1998. Au total, la voie verte « La Houillère » traverse les villes de Charleroi et de Châtelet sur 16 Km, réaffectant la ligne 119 et un court tronçon industriel."

This one presented great advantages for mobility, landscape, biodiversity, but also big problems (waste, cutting urban space, degradation of engineering structures). The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (M.E.T.) of the Walloon Region will immediately study and implement this project, the first realization of a fully urban RAVeL. The study and implementation will overlap over the years 1997 to 1999. The inauguration took place in November 1998. In total, the greenway « La Houillère » crosses the cities of Charleroi and Châtelet for 16 km, reassigning line 119 and a short industrial section."
