Embracing Peace - San Diego, CA - Figurative Public Sculpture on Waymarking.com

Embracing Peace is a huge painted bronze sculpture representing the kiss between a sailor and a nurse. It is inspired by an iconic photo taken at Time Square after the capitulation of Japan on Victory Day.

The statue replaces a version made of a foam core with a urethane outer layer named "Unconditional Surrender", displayed in San Diego from 2007 to 2012.

The plaque reads:

This sculpture depicts one of the most famous and iconic moments in the history of the United States, reflecting the joy of the American people upon learning World War II had ended. It is inspired by the spontaneous celebration in New York City's Times Square in August 1945.
The USS Midway Museum thanks these community leaders whose generosity paved the way to "Save the Kiss" for San Diego's waterfront.
