The lock is 300 feet long by 50 feet wide with four rack driven sector gates. A 7.5hp electric motor/gearbox assembly drives each gate. The lock was built in 1946 but was rehabilitated with new drives and controls in 1988. The 1988 variable frequency drives had served them well but were getting too old to get spare parts. EHM replaced all four drives and tied in the new drives to the old console in 2003. (This text was copied from the EHM Co. website.)
