The building occupies most of the city block surrounded by the streets of Eagle, Pine, Columbia and Lodge. In addition to being on the National Register of Historic Places, the courthouse is also a contributing property for the Lafayette Park Historic District.
Originally known as State Hall, the building dates from 1842. Here in the capitol, there are many other equally interesting historical buildings that are a short walk away.
