Weatherford Democrat"Moncrief, who has owned the section for the past three years, enlisted the help of Burleson artist Brad Smith to spice up the area and display the history behind Weatherford by painting a mural on the north wall of Fire Oak Grill.
“I’ve been wanting to do something for a couple of years, just something to help the square and bring people into the area and unify the city,” Moncrief said. “I’m hoping to preserve the history of Weatherford.”
The mural, which stretches across the entire wall, depicts several characteristics of Weatherford including a cutting horse, farmhouse, railroad tracks and the courthouse inside the shape of Texas.
Smith started his artwork five weeks ago on the wall, which was a plain, flat white color, and hopes to be done in the next week or two, adding a few last minute details to the mural, according to Moncrief.
“Brad and I met and went over a lot of the stuff that I wanted in there,” Moncrief said. “He’s going to paint some people, including my wife and myself, and there was talk about painting some famous Weatherford people in there, like actors from Lonesome Dove and Larry Hagman.
“The names won’t be on there, but people will recognize it.”
Smith, who lives in Burleson with his wife, Randi, will add some characteristics of his family in the painting as well.
“He told me he’s going to put two of our horses in there on the left side of the state of Texas,” Randi Smith said. “He’s been bringing me photos every day on his camera to show me the progress.
“I love it, it’s really pretty and colorful.”
Brad Smith got his start doing artwork for nightclubs before moving on to bigger areas.
“His expertise is murals,” Randi Smith said. “He paints anything, any size for home or office or whatever.”
Moncrief plans to host an appreciation for the artist in the next couple of weeks at Fire Oak Grill."
