La porte du
Puycharraud (ou porte du Portail), datant probablement du XIVe siècle, ne
présente aucun dispositif de pont-levis. Elle est le seul élément subsistant de
l’enceinte agrandie au XVe siècle.
La construction en
granit est constituée d’un simple massif rectangulaire sous une toiture à longs
pans. Le passage voûté en berceau surbaissé se fermait par une sorte de cintre
brisé garni d’une herse. Côté ville, un linteau en arc brisé sculpté et un
écusson bûché ornent une petite porte qui s’ouvre sur un escalier à vis et
permet l’accès à un ancien corps de garde.
Au front nord, un
fragment de rempart (2 mètres d'épaisseur) avec huit corbeaux de mâchicoulis
est visible depuis la rue du Guichet.
La porte du
Puycharraud et les restes de remparts sont inscrits aux Monuments Historiques
par arrêté du 17 juin 1941.
Aujourd’hui, la porte
du Puycharraud est aménagée pour accueillir des expositions et héberge depuis
2009 la Bibliothèque Anglaise.

[ENG] The gate of
Puycharraud (or door of the Portal), probably dating from the fourteenth
century, has no drawbridge device. It is the only surviving element of the enlarged
enclosure in the fifteenth century.
The granite
construction consists of a simple rectangular mass under a roof with long sides. The vaulted
barrel vault was closed by a sort of broken hanger furnished with a portcullis. On the city
side, a sculpted carved arch lintel and a crested escutcheon decorate a small
door that opens onto a spiral staircase and provides access to an old
guardhouse.
On the
northern front, a fragment of rampart (2 meters thick) with eight crows of
machicolation is visible from the Rue du Guichet.
The gate of
Puycharraud and the remains of ramparts are registered with the Historical
Monuments by decree of June 17, 1941.
Today, the
door of Puycharraud is arranged to host exhibitions and hosts since 2009 the
English Library.
