A cut benchmark on a quion of the south west corner of St Mary's bell tower, Chadwell.

St Mary's Church, W face SW angle tower. Not on OS Database but shown on 1965-1967 Map as BM 432.41 ft.

"Parish church. C12 and C13. Repaired C17. Restored 1865-6 by R W Johnson. Coursed squared ironstone with limestone dressings. Swithland slate roof to chancel, nave and porch, copper roof to aisle and Welsh slate roof to tower. Chancel, nave, S aisle, S porch and W tower. 1-bay chancel has two lancet windows to E end with hood moulds; that to left with carved head to top of arch. Paired lancet to S with hood mould and carved head to spandrel. Blocked priests' door to S-W with Caernarvon-arched head. Limestone quoins and stone-coped E gable. Nave has C19 paired Caernarvon-arched windows in blocked arches of former N arcade. S aisle has C19 paired lancet windows to S with hood moulds; small blocked 2-light stone mullion window to W end at high level. C13 S doorway with chamfer and C19 hood mould and label stops. Porch has doorway with continuous chamfer outermost, chamfered arch innermost on polygonal responds. Narrow rectangular 1-light windows to E and W with chamfered stone surrounds. Small 3-stage tower has lancet window to bottom stage W with hood mould, small rectangular window to middle stage S with splayed limestone jambs and ironstone lintel, and twin bell-chamber openings with octagonal central shaft and hood mould. Interior: Chancel has small piscina and aumbry with central square shaft with moulded base and capital, chamfered jambs and lintels and spherical triangular drain to piscina. Nave has 3-bay arcades. N arcade is Norman and blocked. Circular piers with square abaci, that to N-W with zigzag ornament, roll-moulding to N-E pier and imposts to responds; plain round-headed arches. C13 S arcade has octagonal piers with moulded bases and capitals with nailhead ornament, polygonal responds and double-chamfered arches. Tower arch has semi-circular responds with moulded bases and capitals and double-chamfered round arch. W window of truer is round-headed inside and has deep splay. Norman font has circular, tub-shaped bowl with intersecting, beaded, round- headed arches to liner part of bail, rather crudely executed."
